FlipFlop Wines Help Soles4Souls
FlipFlop Wines (from Underdog Wine Merchants) have partnered with Soles4Souls, a non-profit organization dedicated to providing much needed shoes to people in developing nations.
Children in these countries often grow to adulthood without ever owning a pair of shoes, despite the serious health risks posed by going barefoot.
Currently, there are over 20 million barefoot children in Sub-Saharan Africa alone - a startling statistic for those of us who take owning many pairs of shoes for granted.
FlipFlop will be helping Soles4Souls reach their 2011 goal of providing 11 million pairs of shoes to those in need by donating one pair of flip flop sandals per bottle of FlipFlop Wine sold (up to 100,000 bottles).
About the wine ~
Created by vintner David Georges, the FlipFlop Wine collection includes Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Riesling, Pinot Grigio, Pinot Noir and Moscato. We had the opportunity to sample the Pinot Grigio, Pinot Noir and Riesling and found all three varieties to be nicely balanced and food friendly.
Tasting Notes ~
FlipFlop 2009 Pinot Noir was our favorite of the three. It's a medium-bodied, off-dry wine with ripe cherry flavors, a hint of spice and a velvety finish. The vintner suggests pairing it with grilled mahi mahi, bacon wrapped shrimp, or chocolate chip cookies - all great choices.
We rarely follow the rules though, so we served it with an assortment of cheeses that included Camembert and Goat Gouda and found it to be a great complement.
The 2010 Pinot Grigio was light-bodied and refreshing, slightly dry with notes of citrus, apple and pear. It was a perfect choice to serve with our Angel Hair With Scallops In White Wine Butter.
Last, but not least FlipFlop's 2009 Washington Riesling is a medium-bodied, lightly sweet white wine with aromas of tropical fruits and ripe stone fruit and melon on the palate. We really enjoyed it with some take-out sushi - a perfect combo for sure!
FlipFlop Wines are available nationwide at a suggested retail of just $7 per bottle. At such an affordable price, there's no reason to wait for a special occasion, so pick your favorite varietal, enjoy a glass of wine and know that your choice has helped to make a difference for those in need.
